Tom Sam (Thomas SAMEL) Né à Agen, en 1981.
Lauréat 2021 de l’Aide Individuelle à la Création, attribuée par la DRAC Occitanie, il développe actuellement un projet initié auparavant par une résidence artistique au Vietnam, le pays d’origine de ses grands-parents. Il interroge les liens familiaux, la notion d’exil et du « chez-soi ».

La peinture de Tom Sam fait référence à son propre vécu, à ses souvenirs, à ses rencontres. Il peint ceux qu’on appelle les proches, s’inspirant de photos qu’il a souvent prises lui-même, d’images qui ont en commun le fait qu’il ressent pour elles une proximité.
Cette résolution autobiographique est un point de départ empathique qui lui permet de remettre en suspension les émotions du vécu. Il peut ensuite prendre du recul sur l’image et cheminer librement entre l’introspection et la confrontation avec le réel, donnant ainsi à son œuvre intimiste un caractère qui tend vers l’universel.
La figure humaine est centrale, interrogeant l’ambivalence des relations, les tiraillements qui nous poussent vers des directions contradictoires, les distances qui existent entre le monde d’où l’on vient et celui vers lequel on se dirige. Ainsi, son œuvre est peuplée d’individus silencieux qui subissent l’appel du lointain, tout en recherchant inexorablement l’amour de leur prochain. Le romantisme éprouvé comme une sorte de malédiction s’exerce dans le choix des couleurs au contraste violent qui semble contredire le réalisme cruel et rugueux des corps. Les compositions parfois austères laissent transparaitre une narration équivoque, une dramaturgie allusive. On ressent alors la difficulté humaine de la fixation, une tension produite par cet équilibre instable entre la vérité menaçante et la beauté rassurante des illusions.
Voyageur, son passé de biologiste de terrain lui a permis d’appréhender le monde et ses peuplements de manière sensible, en observateur vigilant. Aujourd’hui, sa peinture est devenue une possibilité de traduire sa compréhension organique de la nature et de l’humain.
Born in Agen (France) in 1981.
He grew up with a strong love of nature, which led him to study biology and work as an ecologist in France and around the world. However, 2010 marked a new chapter of his life as he decided to leave the scientific world to travel and work on artistic projects. He settled in Greece for a while, where he devoted himself to painting and poetry. He also made fanzines and developed musical projects. He returned to France in 2016 and has since taken part in two artistic residencies. The first one in the Gers region of France, and the second in Hanoi, Vietnam.
His recent work questions the conflicting relationships between humans and the frictions that pull us in opposite directions. He paints men and women seeking an inaccessible place, governed by the unrelenting call of the road. His sensitivity to the unknown most likely comes from the fact that his family is from an immigrant background. His paternal grandparents left Vietnam in the mid 50’s to start a new life in France. The search for « home » is a subject he often tackles, questioning the distances between the world from which we originate and the one to which we are heading, between refusal and acquiescence, loneliness and promiscuity, searching for a balance in order to exist amongst others, to construct individuality. As a traveller, his paintings are inspired by his experiences, memories from his journeys and his encounters. The process starts with an image (archive or personal photo) for which he feels empathy or closeness. It is then a question of interpreting it by taking a step back, distancing himself. He uses painting on canvas to explore these questions of proximity / distance, playing with different space constraints to express a paradoxical freedom. Thus he seeks to create a link between memory and the present moment, between the inner journey and the confrontation with reality or with the public. This implies a perpetual movement between different spaces and times, where creation balances between the hard truth and the reassuring beauty of illusions.
